Patrick McNally, the founder of a local billiards league, has identified a unique need in Denver’s music scene for a space dedicated to newgrass music enthusiasts. As a frequent visitor of bars, McNally noticed that jukeboxes often lacked the newgrass tunes that he and his peers enjoy, such as Billy Strings, Kitchen Dwellers, and Old Crow Medicine Show. In response, McNally and seven partners are on a mission to open Yonder Bar at 741 E. Colfax Ave. in early 2024.
Yonder Bar will feature a CD-powered jukebox with albums from the best national and local newgrass artists. Co-owner Josh Kravette describes newgrass as bluegrass music with modern influences from various genres, including jazz, funk, and electronic music.
The 2,500-square-foot venue will include a performance area for bands and can accommodate approximately 130 people. With its prime location next to The Fillmore and The Ogden, the owners hope Yonder Bar will become a popular stop for music lovers.
Yonder Bar is taking over the space once occupied by Sancho’s Broken Arrow, owned by Jay Bianchi. The two-decade-old establishment was closed in October 2022 due to a public nuisance settlement with the City of Denver. The new owners are renovating the space to create a fresh look and are planning to offer pool tables and a variety of affordable drinks.
In addition to the newgrass music offerings, Yonder Bar aims to become a vibrant addition to Colfax Avenue’s thriving music scene. The owners are excited to provide a space where fans of this genre can gather together and enjoy their favorite tunes. Historically, the closure of Sancho’s Broken Arrow and the opening of Yonder Bar represent a shift in Denver’s music and nightlife landscape. With a specific focus on newgrass music, Yonder Bar is set to fill a gap in the market for fans of this unique genre. As Denver continues to evolve as a music destination, Yonder Bar aims to be a welcoming space for both locals and visitors.
