Xcel Energy and Various Agencies Investigating Natural Gas Smell in Denver Metro Area
Xcel Energy, along with several fire departments and other agencies in and around Denver, are currently investigating numerous reports of a natural gas smell across the metro area. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was the first to comment on the smell, with reports coming in from the Highlands Ranch area. The sheriff’s office assured residents that there was no need to call 911 unless they heard a hissing sound or smelled natural gas indoors.
Reports of the odor also came in from South Metro Fire Rescue, Aurora Fire Rescue, and the Denver Fire Department throughout the morning. Xcel Energy spokesperson Michelle Aguayo stated that the company did not find any leaks or breaks in their natural gas system and attributed the odor to sewers. However, they encourage customers to report any suspected natural gas leaks by calling 911 and contacting Xcel Energy directly.
Historically, natural gas smells in urban areas have caused concern due to their potential hazards. In many cases, the odor is caused by an additive put into the gas for safety purposes. This alerting odor is an important safety feature that helps people detect leaks and potentially harmful gas buildup.
