Israeli military forces have recently pulled out of al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City after a two-week raid that left the major medical complex in ruins. The IDF claimed to have killed and detained hundreds of “terrorists” and uncovered weapons and intelligence throughout the hospital. However, Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry reported that numerous bodies were left behind and nearby areas were demolished.
The raid, which saw intense fighting and air strikes, targeted al-Shifa because Hamas had regrouped in the hospital. Photos after the withdrawal showed the destruction of key hospital buildings. The IDF stated that they had completed their operation while ensuring the safety of civilians, patients, and medical staff.
The head of the World Health Organization reported that 21 patients had died since the hospital came under siege. The conflict in Gaza, which began with Hamas fighters entering southern Israel, has resulted in thousands of Palestinian casualties and a shortage of medical resources. The war has also caused severe hunger in Gaza, leading to concerns of an impending famine.
While the IDF considers the raid a tactical success, some critics argue that it highlights flaws in Israel’s military strategy and the need for a comprehensive post-war plan for the governance of Gaza. The situation in the region remains tense as protests against the government and demands for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza continue. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu underwent a successful surgery for a hernia as the conflict persists.
