Ukraine claims that Russian landing ship Caesar Kunikov has been sunk off Crimea

On February 14, 2024 at 08:36 GMT, Ukraine’s armed forces reported that a Russian amphibious ship, the Caesar Kunikov, had sunk off the coast of Russian-occupied Crimea. The ship came under attack from sea drones, as seen in a video released by the Ukrainian military. Powerful explosions were heard near Yalta, suggesting that the landing ship had been hit not far from the town.

This event is part of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine in the Black Sea region, with Ukraine targeting Russia’s Black Sea fleet in occupied Crimea. Last year, satellite images revealed that much of the fleet had left the peninsula.

Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence published a video showing the Magura V5 naval drones striking the Caesar Kunikov. Russia has yet to confirm the sinking of the ship, but Ukrainian intelligence reported that it was destroyed in Ukrainian territorial waters by a unit called Group 13.

The Caesar Kunikov, which dates back to the end of the Soviet era, would be the second successful strike in the Black Sea this month if its sinking is confirmed. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is set to enter its third year, with the situation described as “extremely complex” by Ukraine’s armed forces chief, Col Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi.

This recent attack adds to the history of tensions and conflicts in the Black Sea region. It’s important to remember the historical context of this region, from ancient Greek colonies to the Crimean War of the mid-19th century. More recently, the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014 has stirred up geopolitical tensions and military unrest in the area.

This sinking also highlights the evolution of modern warfare, with the use of sea drones and advanced military tactics. The ongoing conflict has significant implications for regional security and international relations. As the situation continues to develop, the world watches closely for further escalations and diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
