Top Sumo Champion Hakuho Demoted for Protege’s Violent Behavior

Sumo wrestling legend, Hakuho Sho, has been demoted from his prestigious position as a trainer after a disturbing investigation revealed that one of his students had been repeatedly assaulting other wrestlers. The 38-year-old Hakuho was downgraded to the lowest rank for sumo elders and faced a pay cut as a consequence.

His protégé, Hokuseiho Osamu, confessed to assaulting his fellow wrestlers by slapping their faces and hitting them with a broom handle. Hakuho expressed remorse and took responsibility for not being able to protect the victims. The Japan Sumo Association conducted an investigation following a social media tip-off in January, uncovering the disturbing behavior within the stable.

Hokuseiho, just 22 years old, admitted to further acts of violence such as slapping junior wrestlers’ backs and testicles, as well as igniting insecticide spray towards them. He expressed deep regret for his actions and offered to retire, a decision that was reportedly accepted by the sumo association.

Hakuho, of Mongolian descent, had a successful sumo career, winning a record number of tournaments before retiring in 2021. He transitioned into a coaching role, known as stablemaster Miyagino, overseeing the training of young wrestlers.

The demotion of Hakuho is considered a significant punishment within the sumo community, reflecting the severity of the misconduct. It serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding discipline and respect within the traditional sport of sumo wrestling.
