USC Suffers Loss to No. 11 Gonzaga in Las Vegas Invitational
USC faced a tough loss to No. 11 Gonzaga in a nonconference game played in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The Trojans, who were favored to win by 3.5 points according to ESPN.com, ultimately fell to Gonzaga in an 89-76 defeat.
The game saw slow starts for USC in both halves, with Gonzaga leading wire-to-wire. Despite forcing the Bulldogs into more turnovers, the Trojans were unable to capitalize on these opportunities, ultimately finishing with 10 points off turnovers and eight fast-break points. Gonzaga, on the other hand, turned their 10 forced turnovers into 15 points off turnovers and finished with 21 fast-break points.
USC freshman guard Isaiah Collier’s scoring was limited by Gonzaga’s defensive strategy, but he still managed to contribute with five assists in the first half. Senior guard Boogie Ellis led all scorers with 28 points on 12-of-21 shooting, along with seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Notably, USC played without freshman guard Bronny James, who is expected to return to practice the following week after suffering a cardiac arrest episode in late July. His collegiate debut is anticipated at a later date.
The loss drops USC’s record to 5-3 as the team prepares to return home to play Long Beach State. The Trojans will need to regroup and refocus as they continue their nonconference games this season.
