Six Hospitalized After Migrants Found on Ferry in East Sussex

On 16th February 2024 at 12:42 GMT, an incident occurred at Newhaven Ferry Port, in which six individuals were taken to hospital after being discovered in a lorry aboard a ferry. The exact number of people found has not been confirmed at this time.

According to Sussex Police, one man has been arrested on suspicion of facilitating illegal entry to the UK, and a second man was arrested for illegally entering the UK. Despite this, no fatalities have been reported, and the port remains open.

Upon arriving at the scene, Border Force and police found several ambulances in attendance. The South East Coast Ambulance Service was called to the port at 09:40 GMT. The Home Office has affirmed that Border Force is supporting emergency services during this time.

This incident has raised concerns locally, with Lewes MP Maria Caulfield expressing her worries and thanking emergency services for their response. Additionally, Newhaven resident Martin Sinnock expressed feeling “deeply sad” upon hearing that migrants were found in the vehicle.

Ferry operator DFDS confirmed the incident, stating that migrants were found on board the Seven Sisters ferry, and that immediate medical attention was provided, with relevant authorities being contacted as per standard procedure.
