The A1 in Lincolnshire closed due to crash involving two lorries
On 18 March 2024 at 08:27 GMT, part of the A1 in Lincolnshire was closed following a collision between two lorries near the A151 junction at Colsterworth. The incident occurred at approximately 06:45 GMT and resulted in the closure of both carriageways. Lincolnshire Police reported that no serious injuries were sustained in the crash. However, the road is expected to remain closed for several hours as recovery and repair work is carried out.
Anita Davies, manager of the A1 Stadium Diner at Colsterworth, described the scene as chaotic, with traffic blocked in both directions. She advised motorists to avoid the area and follow local diversion routes suggested by the police.
Recovery efforts are underway at the crash site, with one lorry overturned and debris scattered across the road. Drivers are experiencing significant delays and diversions, causing frustration and congestion in the surrounding area. This incident is not an isolated occurrence, with locals recounting previous accidents along this stretch of the A1.
Calls for the road to be upgraded to a motorway have been made by supporters who believe it would reduce the frequency of accidents. According to transport research group Midlands Connect, there have been nearly 1,000 crashes on the A1 between Peterborough and Blyth since 2015, with 36 of them resulting in fatalities. The latest crash serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety measures and the need for infrastructure improvements to prevent future accidents.
