Wendy Mitchell, a pioneer in dementia awareness advocacy, passed away at the age of 68 after battling the disease for 10 years. She was diagnosed with early onset dementia in 2014 at the age of 58, and soon after, she started a blog called “Which Me Am I Today?”
Mitchell, from Beverley, spent the last years of her life raising awareness about dementia and sharing her personal journey through her blog. She also gave talks across the UK and authored three books on the subject.
Before her diagnosis, Mitchell worked for the NHS in a non-clinical role in York for 20 years. She used her experience to shed light on the challenges faced by individuals with dementia, becoming a fearless advocate for the cause.
In a moving final post titled “My Final Hug in a Mug,” Mitchell shared her perspective on living with dementia, expressing her resilience and determination to cope with the effects of the disease. She also discussed her fears of not recognizing her daughters and losing her independence.
Mitchell’s daughters, Sarah and Gemma, confirmed her passing on social media, describing her as a beacon of bravery and compassion. Through her openness about her experience with dementia, Mitchell inspired countless individuals to live their lives with less fear of the disease.
