Firefighters continue to battle a stubborn blaze near Southampton FC’s St Mary’s Stadium, which broke out at industrial units on Wednesday afternoon. The fire sent a massive plume of smoke into the sky, prompting road closures and warnings for residents to keep windows and doors closed.

The fire, which initially led to the cancellation of the Saints Championship match against Preston, has proven difficult to extinguish due to the presence of plastics in the building. Over 100 firefighters have been working to put out deep-seated hotspots that are still burning.

Despite the wind changing direction, causing more areas to be affected by smoke, officials are urging residents to follow safety precautions and avoid touching any debris from the fire. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

Southampton City Council has issued a warning for residents to leave any ash or debris from the fire untouched. The South Central Ambulance Service reported treating one person for smoke inhalation, but no other injuries were reported.

The stadium’s scheduled match against Preston has been postponed, with a new date to be announced. The fire service anticipates a prolonged presence in the area as they work to fully extinguish the fire. The community is encouraged to stay updated on developments as the situation progresses.
