On the night of 31 January, Abdul Shokoor Ezedi, the Clapham chemical attack suspect, went missing near Chelsea Bridge in west London. Police believe he entered the River Thames on that fateful night, just hours after the attack occurred. CCTV footage captured him pacing and leaning over the bridge before disappearing from view. Ezedi is accused of dousing a woman and her daughters with a corrosive substance, whom he had a previous relationship with.
The Metropolitan Police have initiated searches in the River Thames near Chelsea Bridge and the surrounding areas in hopes of finding Ezedi’s body. Despite the challenges posed by the fast-flowing and hazardous conditions of the Thames, authorities remain committed to their search efforts. At a briefing, Metropolitan Police officers expressed the likelihood that Ezedi may have entered the water, expressing the grim reality that his body may never resurface.
A former senior counter-terrorism officer with the Met suggested that authorities would likely employ sonar technology to aid in the river search. This latest development comes after police indicated that Ezedi may have been receiving assistance to evade capture, prompting inquiries targeting his associates.
Originally from Afghanistan, Ezedi arrived in the UK in 2016 and was living in Newcastle at the time of the attack. His asylum claim had been rejected twice before he was ultimately allowed to remain in the UK after claiming he had converted to Christianity. Ezedi had a history of criminal offences and was convicted of two sexual offences in 2018, but his crimes did not meet the threshold for deportation.
The injured woman from the attack remains hospitalized, with concerns about the potential loss of sight in one eye. Ezedi’s whereabouts had been of significant concern, and authorities had urged him to seek medical attention for his own serious facial injuries. As the search for Ezedi and the investigation into the attack continue, the community seeks closure and justice for the victims.
