Three University of Wyoming students tragically lost their lives in a single-car crash in Colorado on Thursday. The victims were identified as Charlie Clark, 19, Carson Muir, 18, and Luke Slabber, 21. They were all members of the university’s swimming and diving team.
The accident occurred on Highway 287, about 10 miles from the Colorado-Wyoming border. The Toyota RAV4, carrying five people, veered off the road near Red Mountain Road in Larimer County and rolled over. Clark, Muir, and Slabber, along with two other individuals who survived the crash, were all student-athletes on the university’s swimming and diving team. The survivors were released from the hospital the following day.
Initial reports suggest that the driver of the RAV4 swerved, causing the vehicle to roll multiple times. The Colorado State Patrol is currently investigating the cause of the crash, considering factors such as speed, impairment, and distractions.
Clark was a sophomore studying psychology, Muir was a freshman majoring in animal and veterinary sciences, and Slabber was a junior studying construction management. The group was not traveling for any official school or athletic function at the time.
University of Wyoming President Ed Seidel expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, emphasizing the impact on the university community and the families of the victims. Director of Athletics Tom Burman extended thoughts and prayers to the affected individuals.
To provide support, the University of Wyoming Department of Athletics has made counseling services available to students and coaches. Additionally, the University Counseling Center and the Employee Assistance Program are ready to assist those in need.
This devastating incident serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of coming together in times of grief. The legacy of Charlie Clark, Carson Muir, and Luke Slabber will be remembered by their university community and beyond. Our thoughts are with their families and loved ones during this difficult time.
