The Impact of Covid-19 on Politics: Unleashing Anger, Inefficiency, and Corruption

Like many others, I have experienced both Covid and long Covid, and they are truly different challenges. When I first contracted Covid at the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, it was a scary and uncertain time. While I didn’t get very sick, I likely passed the virus on to my father, who did. It seemed like Covid was a threat that affected everyone, but especially the elderly and vulnerable.

Last year, I developed long Covid, six months after having glandular fever. This time, the effects were much worse and more persistent. Some days, getting out of bed was a struggle, and it felt like Covid amplified the symptoms I was already dealing with. The experience was isolating and unpredictable, with good days quickly followed by bad ones.

The physical and psychological impacts of both short and long Covid mirror the political consequences of the disease. The pandemic initially brought people together in a shared experience, but as time passed, the political aftermath became more apparent. Different countries faced unique challenges, revealing pre-existing weaknesses in their systems. Populism, geopolitical tensions, and climate action all continue to be significant issues, with Covid exacerbating existing problems.

While the pandemic initially highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of various political systems, the reality proved more complex. Autocratic regimes like China appeared to have an edge in controlling the virus, while democracies struggled to keep pace. However, factors like demographics and geographic isolation played significant roles in determining a country’s success in managing Covid.

As we navigate the ongoing effects of the pandemic, it is clear that Covid has not only destabilized our Health but also our political systems. The immediate crisis has passed, but the long-term repercussions are still unfolding. It’s a reminder of the fragility of our systems and the need for resilience in the face of future challenges.
