April 1-7, 2024 marks National Public Health Week, a time to celebrate the tireless efforts of public health workers across the nation. This year’s theme, “Protecting, Connecting, and Thriving: We Are All Public Health,” highlights the crucial role that individuals, organizations, and agencies play in advancing health equity and well-being in our communities.
From preventing chronic diseases to responding to natural disasters, public health workers are dedicated to improving the health and safety of all. Through their efforts, Americans have seen an increase in life expectancy, a decline in vaccine-preventable diseases, and advancements in maternal and infant health.
One notable success story is the Centers for Disease Control’s “Tips from Former Smokers” campaign, which helped over a million people quit smoking, saving lives and healthcare costs. Additionally, initiatives to protect health during extreme heat have been implemented to combat the increasing threat of heatwaves.
Dr. J. Nadine Gracia, President and CEO of Trust for America’s Health, emphasizes the need for increased funding in public health to prevent illness and reduce healthcare spending. TFAH has called for $4.5 billion annually to fully support public health infrastructure nationwide.
As National Public Health Week unfolds, each day will focus on a different public health theme to raise awareness and promote healthy communities. Visit the American Public Health Association for more information and resources on these topics.
