AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile experience widespread network outages in the United States

On Thursday morning, AT&T’s network suffered widespread outages across the country, causing disruptions in cellular service and internet connectivity. According to the tracking site Downdetector, over 32,000 AT&T outages were reported by customers at about 4 a.m. ET, with the number surging to more than 71,000 just before 8 a.m. ET. Reports of outages also surfaced for some Verizon and T-Mobile customers, though theirs appeared to be less widespread than AT&T.

At around 7 a.m. ET, 1,100 T-mobile outages and about 3,000 Verizon outages were reported. The most affected areas were Houston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Atlanta.

AT&T acknowledged the issue Thursday morning, saying, “Some of our customers are experiencing wireless service interruptions this morning,” and urged affected customers to use Wi-Fi calling until service is restored. Meanwhile, Verizon stated that the outages were not directly impacting their network but were affecting their customers trying to reach another carrier experiencing the issue. T-Mobile also reassured customers that their network was operating normally and suggested that Downdetector numbers likely reflected customers attempting to reach users on other networks.

The outages raised concerns as some people may have been unable to call 911 in the case of an emergency. San Francisco’s Fire Department and other emergency response agencies issued warnings, advising affected AT&T customers to try calling from a landline or ask a friend or family member from a different carrier to call 911 on their behalf.

It’s not clear what triggered the service disruption, but the incident underscores the critical role of reliable network connectivity in emergency situations.
