Student athletes participate in competitive sports medicine event

Thirteen University of North Georgia (UNG) students recently participated in the Southeast American College of Sports Medicine (SEACSM) Annual Meeting in Greenville, South Carolina, where they competed and placed in various events. The students showcased their expertise in the field of sports medicine through poster presentations and Quiz Bowl competitions.

Dr. Sabrina Fordham, the associate department head and associate professor of kinesiology at UNG, emphasized the importance of such meetings for student growth, as they provide opportunities for networking, professional development, and scientific knowledge. Several students were inspired to pursue their own research projects after attending the conference.

Among the students who presented posters at the event were Danielle Bull, Lily Cohran, and Ray Davis and Shep Hancock. Cohran, a senior majoring in kinesiology with an exercise science concentration, placed third in the undergraduate student poster competition for her research on “Anaerobic Performance Improvements Following Ingestion Of R-1,3-Butanediol (KETONEIQ).”

In addition to the poster presentations, UNG students Connor McKay and Zachary Payne participated in the Quiz Bowl and placed sixth out of 32 teams. McKay, a junior also majoring in kinesiology, expressed that the Quiz Bowl was a valuable opportunity to compare the quality of education in UNG’s Kinesiology Department with programs at other universities.

The involvement of UNG students at the SEACSM Annual Meeting highlights the university’s commitment to providing hands-on learning experiences and opportunities for professional growth in the field of sports medicine. Congratulations to all the students who represented UNG with excellence at the conference.
