Shannon Stillwell, a co-defendant of rapper Young Thug in the ongoing racketeering and gang conspiracy case in Atlanta, was stabbed in jail on Sunday night, delaying the trial. His lawyer, Max Schardt, confirmed that Stillwell is alive, but the severity of the injuries is still unknown.
The Fulton County Jail, also known as Rice Street, where Stillwell was being held, has faced criticism for its disorder and recent violence. Natalie L. Ammons, director of communications for Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed the stabbing but did not provide further details.
Stillwell, also known as SB or Shannon Jackson, faces charges of conspiracy to violate the RICO Act and participation in criminal street gang activity, as well as two counts of murder, including involvement in a drive-by shooting in 2015. This incident reportedly led to a yearslong war in the area. Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams, is accused of being the leader of the violent criminal street gang known as YSL (Young Slime Life). He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The trial, which began on Nov. 27, has already seen several delays and disruptions. Judge Ural Glanville called for a recess on Monday due to a “medical issue” involving one of the trial participants. It is expected that the trial could last up to six months or even longer.
After the court adjourned on Monday, Judge Glanville issued orders related to Stillwell’s case, allowing his legal team to visit him at Atlanta’s Grady Hospital and ordering that he be kept separate from the other defendants upon his recovery.
This case is historic as it involves a high-profile rapper and addresses issues related to gang activity and criminal street gangs. The trial has garnered significant public attention and is being closely watched by both the media and the public.
In a statement, Mr. Schardt expressed the desire for Stillwell to have his day in court and emphasized that they believe in his innocence. He also stated that they don’t want unnecessary delays and will defer to the doctors regarding the recovery process.
