SGA Senator and Co-Chair of Mental Health Assembly Runs for President – The GW Hatchet

Ethan Fitzgerald, a sophomore majoring in political science and organizational sciences at George Washington University, has officially announced his bid for Student Government Association president. Fitzgerald’s platform focuses on expanding student Health resources on campus, including extending Lerner Health and Wellness Center hours and reducing the cost of the University’s contraceptive vending machines.

If elected, Fitzgerald plans to advocate for the addition of a voting student to the Board of Trustees, despite their rejection of the SGA’s previous request. He has already begun discussions with key administrators and trustees to address the logistics of this proposal.

Fitzgerald, who previously co-chaired the Mental Health Assembly, aims to renew the assembly to continue enhancing mental health resources for students. He has worked closely with Counseling and Psychological Services to provide free therapy through TimelyCare and plans to further collaborate with campus stakeholders to improve student well-being.

In addition to his focus on mental health, Fitzgerald plans to enhance collaboration between student organizations and administrative offices to ensure smoother communication and planning. He believes in leveraging his position as president to facilitate dialogue and improve resource allocation for student initiatives.

Fitzgerald also aims to reform the University’s academic advising system by suggesting a peer-to-peer advising model. Provost Chris Bracey has expressed interest in investing in academic advising programs to better support student success.

As a candidate with experience in leadership roles within student organizations, Fitzgerald brings a unique perspective and a commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive community for all students. His personal journey at GW has inspired his vision for a campus where everyone feels at home.

With candidate registration for the SGA Election closing soon, Fitzgerald must secure the necessary signatures to officially appear on the ballot. The election will take place on April 11 and 12, offering students the opportunity to vote for their next SGA president.
