Illinois stabbing spree claims 4 lives, including brave 15-year-old who died protecting her sister

Illinois Man Goes on Stabbings and Attacks in Rockford, Leaving Four Dead

An Illinois man, Christian Soto, 22, is facing charges of murder, attempted murder, and home invasion after a series of stabbings and attacks in and near Rockford on Wednesday left four people dead and seven others injured. Among the victims was a 15-year-old girl who died heroically while saving her sister.

The violent spree, described by Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara as a “random and senseless act of violence,” unfolded at multiple locations in Rockford and Winnebago County. Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd called the crimes committed by the suspect “heinous.”

According to Winnebago County State’s Attorney J. Hanley, Soto allegedly confessed to the attacks and claimed that he had consumed marijuana laced with an unknown narcotic before the rampage. The suspect and one victim were known to be friends.

The tragic events began when officers responded to reports of a person being run over by a vehicle and stabbed outside a home. The victims, identified as Jacob Schupbach, 23, and Ramona Schupbach, 63, were found deceased with stab wounds. Jacob Schupbach was allegedly chased and attacked by Soto with a knife, then run over by a vehicle as he tried to escape. Ramona Schupbach was also fatally stabbed in the same incident.

The violence continued as Soto targeted a mailman, identified as Jay Larson, who was delivering mail in the neighborhood. Larson was fatally stabbed multiple times in the front yard of a home. Authorities commended Larson for “doing what he loved, serving his community” during the attack.

Three girls were also attacked by Soto with a softball bat at another location, resulting in the death of 15-year-old Jenna Newcomb. One of the injured girls revealed that Soto entered the home, armed with a bat, and assaulted them in a basement bedroom.

Soto then proceeded to break into a woman’s home in Winnebago County, where he attacked her with a knife. A passing driver intervened and was also assaulted by Soto before police arrived and took him into custody. The woman and the man who intervened sustained injuries but are expected to recover.

Soto appeared in court on Thursday and was denied pretrial release. If convicted, he faces significant prison time for the charges against him.

The community of Rockford is reeling from the tragedy, with officials offering support to the victims’ families and providing counseling services to those in need. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has expressed his condolences and is closely monitoring the situation.

As investigations continue, federal law enforcement officials have joined the case to ensure justice is served. Rockford, a city with a population of approximately 150,000 residents located northwest of Chicago, is coming together in the aftermath of this devastating event.
