Two juveniles have been charged in relation to a shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade that resulted in one fatality and 22 injuries, according to officials on Friday. The juveniles, who were apprehended after the parade, were charged with gun-related and resisting arrest offenses and are currently being held at a juvenile detention center, as stated by the 16th Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri Jackson County Family Court Division.
Police anticipate additional charges as the investigation unfolds. The shooting occurred in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, near Union Station, following the conclusion of the parade and the subsequent rally. Authorities believe that a conflict among multiple individuals led to gunfire, ruling out any evidence of violent extremism or terrorism.
The victim, popular radio DJ Lisa Lopez-Galvan, was tragically killed in the incident. Her brother, Beto Lopez, spoke out about her passing, emphasizing that she was more than just a statistic. He described her as a caring and loving individual during an interview on NBC’s “TODAY” show.
In addition to Lopez-Galvan, 22 others were injured, with the youngest patient being just 6 years old. Three individuals were initially detained after the shooting, but one was later released after it was determined that they were not involved. Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves confirmed the recovery of several firearms from the scene.
Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene as people scattered in different directions. Nick Buddy and Jacob Gooch, both present at the event, recounted their experiences of witnessing the tragic incident and sustaining injuries.
