2024 Oscar Nominations Announced

This morning, the 96th Academy Awards nominations will be announced, with many expecting “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” to dominate the list of nominees. The announcement will be made at 8:30 a.m. EST and livestreamed on various platforms, including Oscars.com and Oscars.org. This year, the Academy received a record number of ballots from 93 countries, resulting in a diverse pool of nominees.

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” is the front runner for several awards, including best picture and best director. Despite being a big-budget auteur, Nolan has never won an Academy Award, making this a particularly exciting year for the acclaimed director.

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is also expected to receive numerous nominations, including best picture and best director. With over $1.4 billion in ticket sales, “Barbie” is the year’s biggest hit and likely to be a strong contender in multiple categories.

In addition to these films, other potential nominees for best picture include “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Poor Things,” “The Holdovers,” “Maestro,” “American Fiction,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Past Lives,” and “The Zone of Interest.”

While the best picture category may seem locked, the competition is fierce in other categories, particularly best actor and best actress. Lily Gladstone, expected to be the first Native American nominated for best actress, is a frontrunner for her role in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” while the best actor category has several deserving candidates vying for a spot.

Despite the increase in streaming company releases like Apple’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Netflix’s “Maestro,” the best picture category is expected to feature a mix of box-office hits and independent films.

With the announcement of the nominations, excitement for the Academy Awards is building, and the presence of films like “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” is likely to boost interest in the upcoming telecast on ABC.

Historically, the Academy Awards have been influenced by blockbuster films, and this year’s nominations are sure to generate buzz and anticipation for the awards ceremony on March 10. With Jimmy Kimmel returning as host, the telecast is set to be a highly-anticipated event for film enthusiasts and industry professionals alike.
