Opinion | Ronna McDaniel and Trump’s Bibles both exhibit signs of decay

The recent controversy at NBC surrounding Ronna McDaniel’s brief stint as a political commentator and Donald Trump’s attempt to sell MAGA-branded Bibles both highlight the ways in which Trump is distorting our nation’s core institutions.

While NBC has a history of featuring conservative commentators, the uproar over McDaniel’s hiring arose from her complicity in Trump’s falsehoods surrounding the 2020 Election. Her refusal to unequivocally acknowledge Joe Biden’s victory and her continued support of Trump’s baseless claims led to a staff uprising and raised questions about journalistic integrity.

Similarly, Trump’s decision to peddle Bibles at exorbitant prices reflects his manipulation of Christian beliefs for political gain. The PRRI-Brookings poll revealing the shifting views of White evangelicals on morality in Politics underscores the extent to which Trump has influenced conservative Christians to compromise their values.

These instances, seemingly unrelated, illustrate the dangerous impact of Trumpism on both the media and religion. As pillars of societal cohesion and sources of knowledge, these institutions play crucial roles in upholding democracy and fostering moral values. However, when they are co-opted by political agendas that prioritize falsehood and manipulation, the fabric of society is weakened.

In a time when truth and ethical governance are increasingly under threat, it is imperative that we remain vigilant and hold our institutions accountable. Trump’s efforts to undermine the foundations of democracy and faith should serve as a wake-up call for all Americans to stand firm in defense of our core values. As we navigate the challenges of our time, let us remember the words of John 8:32, that “the truth shall make you free,” and strive to uphold that truth in all aspects of our society.
