Opinion: Kari Lake and Bernie Moreno, GOP Senate candidates, are unworthy of victory

PHOENIX — Campaign slogans have played a significant role throughout the history of American Politics, from Herbert Hoover’s “a chicken for every pot” in 1928 to Ronald Reagan’s iconic “It’s morning again in America” in 1984. However, the slogan for Republican Kari Lake’s Senate campaign could perhaps be summed up as “Oh, never mind.”

In both Arizona and Ohio, GOP Senate candidates are causing a dilemma for conservatives. They must choose between the repercussions of losing the Senate or witnessing the conservative party vanish altogether. Lake, who is running for Arizona’s governorship in 2022, has engaged in what can only be described as kamikaze politics.

Lake’s actions have garnered mixed reactions from the public. Her high-decibel imitation of Donald Trump has left many Arizonans weary of her self-absorbed, fact-free rhetoric that echoes Trump’s sore-loser mentality. Despite attempts to reframe her image, Lake’s controversial remarks and tactics have alienated voters, leading to doubts about her ability to govern effectively.

Her opponent, Democrat Ruben Gallego, presents a stark contrast with his progressive ideology that often clashes with conservative values. Meanwhile, in Ohio, the race between Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown and Republican Bernie Moreno has taken a similar turn. Moreno, once critical of Trump, has now aligned himself with the former president, adopting his rhetoric and positions.

The rise of anti-conservative Republicans like Lake and Moreno poses a threat to the party’s future. With a lack of sound ideas and good manners, the GOP risks losing its conservative identity. If conservatism is to regain prominence within the party, Republicans must resist electing candidates who prioritize performative politics over substantive governance.

In the face of this political upheaval, conservatives must focus on persuading voters and advocating for their values. The current climate of divisiveness and extremism only serves to erode the foundations of democracy. By rejecting candidates like Lake and Moreno, Republicans can work towards a more inclusive and effective political landscape.

As the nation navigates the challenges of a polarized political climate, it is crucial for voters to consider the long-term implications of their choices. The future of conservatism hinges on the decisions made today, and the path forward requires a return to principles of reason, civility, and respect.
