OpenAI Bans Developer of ChatGPT-Powered Bot Mimicking Political Candidate
Artificial intelligence company OpenAI has taken action against the developer of a bot mimicking Democratic presidential hopeful Rep. Dean Phillips. This marks the first time OpenAI has intervened in response to what it perceives as a misuse of its AI tools in a political campaign.
The bot, named Dean.Bot, was created by Silicon Valley entrepreneurs Matt Krisiloff and Jed Somers to support Phillips’s super PAC, We Deserve Better. The goal was to use the bot, which was powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT conversational software, to engage with voters ahead of the New Hampshire primary.
However, OpenAI suspended the account of the AI start-up Delphi, which had been contracted to build the bot, in response to a Washington Post story about the SuperPAC. OpenAI’s rules prohibit the use of its Technology in political campaigns, leading to the removal of Dean.Bot after the account suspension.
OpenAI spokesperson Lindsey Held emphasized the importance of following usage policies, stating, “We recently removed a developer account that was knowingly violating our API usage policies which disallow political campaigning, or impersonating an individual without consent.”

Krisiloff, a former chief of staff to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, denied any involvement from Altman in the super PAC. Altman has met with Phillips but has no direct role in the project.
