Knisley, City Planner, Manages Work, Farm, and Business Responsibilities

John Knisley, the City Planner for New Ulm, is deeply invested in the development and growth of his beloved hometown. After leaving New Ulm to pursue a career in environmental policy and planning at the federal level, Knisley discovered that his impact on local communities was minimal. This realization led him to return home, where he has since played a crucial role in shaping the city’s future.

Knisley’s extensive background in environmental policy and planning, coupled with his prior experience as a feedlot officer, solid waste and recycling specialist, and assistant zoning administrator for Brown County, has uniquely positioned him to spearhead transformative changes in New Ulm. Since taking on the role of City Planner in 2018, Knisley has been dedicated to updating the city’s zoning ordinance, which had not seen major revisions since 1968.

In addition to his professional responsibilities, Knisley also manages Alternative Roots Farm and runs Tallgrass Cider, a Business he started with his wife after feeling unsatisfied with their desk jobs. The experience gained from running a successful business has equipped Knisley with valuable insights that he applies to his role as a city planner.

Looking ahead, Knisley is committed to enhancing communication with the community and fostering collaboration in city planning initiatives. He envisions a vibrant and cohesive New Ulm, where families and businesses thrive. With plans to secure grant funding for the restoration of the Hermann Monument and address downtown parking concerns, Knisley is determined to ensure that New Ulm continues to evolve while preserving its unique character.

As the city looks towards the future, Knisley’s passion for sustainable development and community engagement will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping New Ulm’s landscape for years to come.
