Feds allege NJ business owner Robert Coppotelli wore jacket with his name and phone number to Capitol riot

A New Jersey Business owner, Robert Coppotelli, was arrested and charged with four misdemeanor counts for unlawfully entering the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, with the goal of disrupting the session of Congress. The 27-year-old had been on the FBI’s radar since July 2021, thanks to his trademark jacket promoting his business, “Coppotelli Heavy Equipment Sales & Services, Inc.”

Despite attempting to conceal his face with a mask and hat, Coppotelli’s name and business were clearly visible on his jacket as he entered the Capitol alongside other Donald Trump supporters, as captured on security cameras. The warrant states that rioters used wooden planks, stolen police shields, and other blunt objects to smash the windows and gain access to the Capitol building.

Coppotelli allegedly spent 12 minutes walking through the stormed building before disappearing through a broken window. Investigators were able to easily track down his business, which is registered with the US Department of Transportation at the same Toms River address where Coppotelli lives. The company’s logo matched the text and artwork on the suspect’s jacket, which included a large American flag.

More than 1,300 defendants have been charged in connection to the Capitol riot, with roughly 900 of them having pleaded guilty or been convicted at trial. Coppotelli’s case adds to the ongoing legal actions taken against those involved in the insurrection.

The events of January 6, 2021, marked a dark day in US history as supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol in an attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential Election results. The violent and unprecedented attack led to widespread condemnation and heightened concerns about the state of democracy in the country.

Coppotelli’s alleged involvement serves as a reminder of the ongoing repercussions following the Capitol riot, as legal proceedings continue against those who participated in the destructive events.
