Ontario County introduces new 911 technology allowing callers to video chat with dispatcher

A new public safety Technology has been introduced in Ontario County, N.Y., revolutionizing the way 911 emergency calls are handled. The Ontario County 911 center, which receives about 468 emergency calls a day, now has the capability to send livestream video links to callers who dial 911 from their cell phones.

This groundbreaking technology, called Prepared Live, allows for real-time video calls between the 911 dispatcher and the caller, providing crucial visual information to first responders. When a caller dials 911, the dispatcher can send them a video link, allowing them to use their cell phone camera to show the dispatcher the emergency situation.

Sheriff David Cirencione emphasizes that this new tool will enhance law enforcement response to emergencies without delaying the dispatch of first responders. The video link puts the caller face to face virtually with the 911 dispatcher, similar to a Zoom video call.

In addition to providing visual information, the Prepared Live software integrates with the county map to pinpoint the caller’s location. The dispatcher can then zoom in on the location and ask for permission to send a video link to access the caller’s phone camera. This enables the dispatcher to see a live view and provide more accurate instructions or assistance, such as giving CPR instructions in real-time.

In situations where caller safety is a concern, such as violent calls, the dispatcher can make a judgment call on whether to send the video link. There is also a feature that allows the dispatcher to discreetly continue to monitor the situation if the caller must abandon their phone.

Chief Stephen DeChick assures that the technology does not grant law enforcement access to the caller’s phone information and only works with the caller’s consent. Looking ahead, there are plans to potentially expand the technology to share information with officers, EMTs, and firefighters in the field.

This innovative approach to emergency response in Ontario County marks a significant step forward in public safety technology, ensuring that first responders have access to critical visual information to better assist those in need during emergencies.
