President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are projected to win decisively in their respective primary contests, but there are key takeaways for both candidates to consider.

What to watch for in the Michigan primaries:

Assessing Biden’s Israel stance: Biden’s pro-Israel stance, particularly amid the conflict in Gaza that has led to significant Palestinian casualties, has sparked criticism from American progressives and Arab Americans. The city of Dearborn in Michigan holds a sizable Arab American community, and there is a movement among Democratic critics of Israel to vote “uncommitted” on their ballots. Michigan Democrats’ response will be telling on Tuesday.

The GOP process in Michigan: With delegates split between a primary on Tuesday and a state party convention on Saturday, the Michigan Republican process reflects a strategy shift in response to changes in the Democratic presidential nominating calendar. Michigan’s position in the lineup has generated a fractured and complex system.

Challenges for Biden and Trump: Biden relies on support from the United Auto Workers union, Black voters, and a strong Democratic infrastructure, while aiming to replicate the success of Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s victories in 2022. Trump seeks to rebuild his White working-class coalition that secured his 2016 victories in key states.
