One of the standout receivers for the University of Maryland’s football team, redshirt junior tight end Corey Dyches, has announced his decision to enter the transfer portal after four seasons with the Terps. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Dyches had an impressive season, ranking second on the team with 49 receptions for 491 yards and two touchdowns. He also earned an All-Big Ten third-team selection.
According to a tweet from Dyches, he expressed gratitude for his time with the Terps, stating, “All great things come to an end. Grateful to be a terp and forever will be. Thank you Terp Family.”
The transfer portal, which players can officially enter at midnight on Monday, will be open for the following 30 days. Maryland head coach Mike Locksley has previously expressed support for the transfer portal, referring to it as “college free agency.”
Dyches is not the only player leaving the team, as freshman tight end Rico Walker, sophomore defensive back Gavin Gibson, freshman defensive back Tamarcus Cooley, and redshirt freshman offensive lineman Ja’Kavion Nonar are also entering the transfer portal.
Historically, the transfer portal has seen significant activity, with over 2,100 NCAA football players entering it in the last December transfer window, making it the most active window since its creation in 2018.
These departures pose significant changes for the Terps, who finished 7-5 this season and became bowl-eligible for the third straight year. In addition to Dyches, other key players, including Rico Walker and Gavin Gibson, will be leaving the team, potentially impacting the Terps’ performance in the upcoming season.
Freshman Rico Walker, the highest-ranked prospect in the Class of 2023, is one of the notable departures, having made four catches for 27 yards in eight games this season. Sophomore Gavin Gibson, who was expected to take on a larger role next season in the secondary, will also be leaving the team.
