“Interview with Malashock Dance’s new artistic director on the Importance of Connection and ‘Everyday Dances'”

The move to a new city inevitably involves a complex transition process – deciding what to take, what to leave behind, and what to connect with in the future. For Christopher K. Morgan, the new artistic director of Malashock Dance, the relocation from Hawaii to San Diego was remarkably seamless. He and his husband, stage director Kyle Lang, successfully made the move from Maui last November, leaving behind some belongings, while shipping others that held emotional value.

Morgan’s connection to San Diego is deeply rooted in his history with Malashock Dance. Having held his first professional job at Malashock in the 1990s, Morgan sees his return as a coming-full-circle experience. However, this career move isn’t taken lightly, as Morgan brings with him a stellar professional background. Born in California, he lived and worked in various locations across the U.S. and abroad, earning degrees and gaining experience in directing and arts administration. In addition to serving on the National Council on Arts, Morgan also has an extensive network in the global arts community.

One of his first tasks as artistic director was to aid in selecting choreographers for the upcoming “Everyday Dances III” production. The process was challenging, with over 30 applicants vying for a spot. Through this project, Morgan aims to provide a platform for choreographers to showcase their talent, with a vision to connect these emerging artists with national networks in the future.

Moreover, in observing the growing dance community in San Diego, Morgan has identified the need for more support and resources for aspiring choreographers. With his extensive expertise and network, Morgan hopes to provide these artists with opportunities to thrive. The “Everyday Dances III,” running from January 27th to 28th, is the initial step in realizing this goal.
