Advancing Diversity in Public Health Leadership through the ASTHO Program

ASTHO’s DELPH program has announced the selection of 15 mid-to-senior level governmental public Health professionals for its latest cohort. The Diverse Executives Leading in Public Health (DELPH) program is a joint effort by the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) and the Satcher Health Leadership Institute (SHLI) at Morehouse School of Medicine.

The DELPH program specifically targets skilled public health professionals who identify as members of underrepresented groups including individuals of color, those with disabilities, women, or members of the LGBTQ+ community. This initiative aims to foster diversity and inclusivity within public health leadership roles, ultimately working towards shaping healthier and more equitable communities throughout the United States.

Notable members of the new DELPH cohort include Eman Addish from the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, Tasha Catron from the Stark County Health Department, and Chelsei Granderson from the Tennessee Department of Health, among others.

The initiative has received unwavering support from the CDC and has successfully cultivated the growth of 80 scholars since its inception in 2021, providing valuable leadership development opportunities and expanding access to crucial networks within the public health sector.

This latest cohort joins a growing list of DELPH public health leaders who are expected to impact public health policy and health outcomes in the U.S. for generations to come.

It is also interesting to note that the ASTHO is the national nonprofit organization representing the public health agencies of the United States, the U.S. territories and freely associated states, and Washington, D.C. as well as the more than 100,000 public health professionals these agencies employ. ASTHO members, the chief health officials of these jurisdictions, are dedicated to formulating and influencing sound public health policy and ensuring excellence in public health practice.

This commitment to diversity and inclusivity in public health leadership is a key step forward in addressing the historic disparities and inequalities in the field, and marks a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to create systemic change at the intersection of policy and equity.
