Roger Penske faced a significant challenge in his role as the leader of the NTT IndyCar Series as a group of team owners came together in February to address their concerns with the direction of the series under Penske Entertainment. This meeting, organized by Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, included prominent teams like Andretti Global, Arrow McLaren, Chip Ganassi Racing, Ed Carpenter Racing, and Meyer Shank Racing.
The team owners discussed various grievances, including the rising costs of competing in the series as it moves towards hybridization, as well as the increasing administrative and operational fees charged by Penske Entertainment. The meeting, initially scheduled for 30 minutes, lasted 90 minutes and did not include teams such as A.J. Foyt Racing, Dale Coyne Racing, Juncos Hollinger Racing, and Team Penske.
After the private meeting, the team owners decided to approach Penske Entertainment with their united concerns in a non-confrontational manner. A follow-up call was held on February 28 with all 10 full-time teams represented, including Penske and key executives like Bud Denker and Mark Miles.
The dialogue during the call was positive, with both sides expressing their thoughts and concerns. Penske Entertainment expressed a desire to hold more discussions with the team owners and develop a closer working relationship. Instead of scheduling meetings with the entire group, a smaller group of owners would represent all teams in future discussions.
Overall, the meeting was seen as a step in the right direction towards addressing the issues within the series and working together towards solutions. Penske Entertainment CEO Mark Miles emphasized the alignment and helpful dialogue that took place and agreed to continue regular communication moving forward.
While there were some public criticisms from team owner Michael Andretti about Penske’s leadership, the majority of team owners are focused on maintaining a positive relationship with Penske and moving forward in a constructive manner. The hope is that the bridge built during the discussions will not be damaged by any public disputes, and that all parties can work together to ensure the success and growth of the NTT IndyCar Series.
