Troops from the Texas National Guard have taken control of Shelby Park at the US-Mexico border in Eagle Pass, Texas, resulting in tragic consequences. Three migrants, including a woman and two children, drowned in the Rio Grande after state authorities blocked US Border Patrol from accessing miles of the border.
Congressman Henry Cuellar, a Democrat from Texas, criticized the State’s policy, stating that Border Patrol had informed Texas Military Department soldiers of a distressed migrant group, but they refused to grant access, even in an emergency situation.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the tragic deaths and also denounced Texas officials for physically barring Border Patrol agents from entering the area in response to a distress call from the Mexican government.
The Texas Military Department, however, denies any involvement, claiming that they did not observe any distressed migrants and were not made aware of any bodies in the area.
This situation is occurring against the backdrop of a broader conflict between state and federal officials over immigration policies, including the use of razor wire along the border and a new law in Texas that makes entering the state illegally a state crime.
The Biden Administration has taken the issue to the US Supreme Court, seeking intervention to ensure Border Patrol’s access to the area.
This tragic incident highlights the ongoing tensions and clashes between state and federal authorities over immigration policies, marking a critical moment in the ongoing debate over border control and immigration in the United States.
