House Republicans tried to impeach Alejandro Mayorkas, Homeland Security Secretary, but failed. The final vote’s 214-216 result was due to three Republicans joining Democrat members in opposing the measure while another Republican voted against it for procedural reasons. The tied vote at 215-215 became a defeat when Democratic Rep. Al Green, in a wheelchair and hospital scrubs after recovering from surgery, voted no, thereby preventing the impeachment of Mayorkas. Secretary Mayorkas accused the impeachment as baseless and politically motivated and insisted that they focus on their work. The White House also condemned the efforts to impeach Mayorkas. Training his sights on the bipartisan immigration regulation, Mayorkas praised it as tough, fair, and taking significant steps to address the nation’s challenges after years of Congressional inaction.
