Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Tops Weekend Box Office with $45.2 Million
Ghost busting is proving to still be a lucrative Business, as “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” raked in $45.2 million in ticket sales over the weekend, according to studio estimates. This marks Sony Pictures’ first No. 1 film since last summer.
The opening weekend for “Frozen Empire” in 4,345 theaters mirrored the successful launch of “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” in 2021. Both films have not been critical hits, but have resonated with audiences. “Frozen Empire” received a B+ CinemaScore, a slight downgrade from “Afterlife’s” A- score.
Internationally, “Frozen Empire” added $16.4 million in 25 overseas markets. The film, costing around $100 million to make, takes a more family-oriented approach, with original cast members Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Bill Murray in supporting roles.
Meanwhile, “Dune: Part Two” continued to perform well, adding $17.6 million in its fourth weekend. The sci-fi sequel’s domestic total now stands at $233.4 million, with a worldwide haul of $574.4 million.
Other notable releases over the weekend include “Immaculate,” starring Sydney Sweeney, and “Kung Fu Panda 4,” which slid to third place with $16.8 million in its third weekend.
In China, “Kung Fu Panda” has historically been popular, inspiring the country to expand its own film production.
