On the anniversary of Ukrainian journalist Oleksandra “Sasha” Kuvshynova’s tragic death, her family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Fox News. Kuvshynova, just 24 years old, was killed while reporting outside Kyiv alongside Fox News correspondent Benjamin Hall and videographer Pierre Zakrzewski in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion in March 2022.
The lawsuit claims that Fox News failed to adequately protect its reporting team, despite warnings from local residents and security consultants. Kuvshynova and Zakrzewski were tragically killed by Russian shelling, while Hall survived with serious injuries. The Kuvshynova family alleges that Fox News attempted to cover up the true circumstances of the incident and misled the public and the journalists’ families.
The lawsuit also accuses Fox News of spreading false information through Hall’s memoir and attempting to shift blame onto the security consultant hired to protect the journalists. The family’s attorney, Stephen Humphreys, emphasized the importance of holding Fox News accountable to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
In response to the lawsuit, Fox News defended its commitment to journalist safety and refuted the claims made in the lawsuit. Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott, along with Fox Corp. and founder Rupert Murdoch, are named in the lawsuit.
The tragic events surrounding Kuvshynova’s death have led to a legal battle seeking justice for the journalists and their families. The lawsuit sheds light on the dangers faced by journalists working in conflict zones and the responsibilities of media organizations to ensure their safety. Ultimately, the Kuvshynova family hopes that their legal action will bring transparency and accountability to the circumstances surrounding their daughter’s untimely death.
