The Chicks Issue Statement After Founding Member Laura Lynch Dies in Car Crash
The Chicks have released a statement following the tragic passing of their former bandmate, Laura Lynch, in a car accident. Lynch, who was a founding member of the group, was involved in a collision on Highway 62 near El Paso, Texas. The Texas Department of Public Safety has confirmed her death, stating that another vehicle, attempting to pass another car, collided with Lynch’s vehicle head-on. Lynch was declared dead at the scene, with the driver of the other vehicle sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.
Lynch co-founded The Chicks, originally known as The Dixie Chicks, in 1989 alongside Robin Lynn Macy, Martie Erwin, and Emily Erwin. She served as the upright bassist and lead vocalist for the band before leaving in 1995 to focus on family and personal matters. Following her departure from the group, The Chicks went on to achieve mainstream success, with Natalie Maines replacing Lynch as the lead vocalist.
Lynch is survived by her husband, Mac Tull, and their daughter. She was 65 at the time of her passing.
Historically, The Chicks rose to fame in the late 1990s with hits such as “Wide Open Spaces.” They faced controversy in the early 2000s due to controversial remarks on George W. Bush and the Iraq War. Additionally, the band changed their name from The Dixie Chicks to The Chicks due to the racist connotations associated with the original name.
