Kylie Minogue won her second Grammy Award for best pop dance recording at the premiere ceremony of music’s biggest night in Los Angeles. The star’s viral hit Padam Padam became a global smash in 2023, earning her the prestigious award. Other winners at the event included Billie Eilish, Boygenius, SZA, Joni Mitchell, and The Beatles, who won best music video for a new animated clip for I’m Only Sleeping.
Eilish’s Barbie soundtrack song What Was I Made For? earned her the first of what could be many prizes for the night. The song has been praised for its role in helping Eilish overcome a period of writers’ block, and is also up for two of the night’s main prizes, song of the year and record of the year. Kylie, who was not present at the ceremony, was represented by co-writer Peter Rycroft (aka Lostboy), who expressed gratitude to Kylie for believing in the record. This win comes 20 years after Kylie’s first Grammy Award.
SZA, Boygenius, Rapper Killer Mike, and music legend Joni Mitchell were also among the winners of various awards at the premiere ceremony. The night’s leading nominee, SZA, picked up the first award of the night for best pop duo performance for Ghost in the Machine, a collaboration with Phoebe Bridgers. Meanwhile, Joni Mitchell was awarded best folk album for her 2022 comeback album capturing her return to the stage after suffering a brain aneurysm.
This year’s Grammy nominations were dominated by female artists, with multiple nominations going to Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Lana Del Rey, Dua Lipa, and Janelle Monáe. The main ceremony, which will feature performances from Joni Mitchell, Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, SZA, Billy Joel, and U2, is set to start at 20:00 in LA (01:00 GMT). Additionally, the In Memoriam section will see tributes from Stevie Wonder, Annie Lennox, and Fantasia Barrino, among others, paying homage to music industry icons.
