A deadly fire broke out in East Boston early Tuesday morning, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. The blaze started at a multi-family home on Meridian Street and quickly spread to two adjacent buildings. Boston Fire Department responded to the scene where heavy flames were seen shooting out of a second-floor window.
Homicide detectives from the Boston Police Department were called in after one person was found dead at the scene. Six individuals residing in the home, as well as a firefighter, were taken to the hospital, with at least one in critical condition. Five residents were rescued from windows using ladders, and one child was also hospitalized.
The fire, which caused an estimated $5 million in damages, engulfed three buildings, displacing around 30 people. Despite the complexity of the situation, the efforts of the 130 firefighters who responded were praised by Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. The firefighters worked tirelessly for hours to extinguish the stubborn fire that spread to multiple buildings.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, which remains unknown. The community has come together to support those affected, with organizations like the Red Cross and Salvation Army assisting displaced residents.
The mayor emphasized the dangerous nature of the situation and expressed condolences to the victim’s family. Local resident Elenic Rablao shared her shock at the sudden devastation caused by the fire.
