“LA Opera’s ‘Madama Butterfly’ by Puccini to be reimagined on a film soundstage”

The Los Angeles Opera will kick off its 2024-25 season on Sept. 21 with a reimagined production of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” set in a film studio. The company also announced its presentation of the company premiere of Osvaldo Golijov’s “Ainadamar” while reducing its main-stage productions from six to five.

The “Butterfly” staging, originally seen at Madrid’s Teatro Real in 2017, features Karah Son as Cio-Cio-San and Jonathan Tetelma as Pinkerton in their company debuts, with James Conlon conducting in the start of his 19th season as music director. The opera’s CEO, Christopher Koelsch, described the production as fitting for the city of Los Angeles due to its vintage Hollywood soundstage setting.

Following the recovery of revenue from the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, the LA Opera is focused on building long-term resiliency and strength for the organization. “Ainadamar (Fountain of Tears)” is scheduled to open on April 26, 2025, with a Deborah Colker staging featuring Ana María Martínez and Daniela Mack. This will mark the ninth main-stage opera in Spanish in the company’s 38-year history.

Additionally, Ian Judge’s 2005 staging of Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette” will be revived, and Michael Cavanagh’s production of Mozart’s “Così fan tutte” will open in March 2025. Tomer Zvulun’s staging of Verdi’s “Rigoletto” is also set to open in May 2025.

The history of the Los Angeles Opera dates back to its founding in 1986 as a reimagined successor to the defunct Los Angeles Civic Grand Opera. Over the years, the company has become known for its innovative productions and its commitment to presenting a diverse range of operatic works to audiences in Southern California and beyond. As it looks ahead to its upcoming season, the LA Opera continues to uphold its reputation as a leading cultural institution in the region.

The Los Angeles Opera’s 2024-25 season promises to deliver a rich and diverse program of opera productions, showcasing both classic and contemporary works while engaging audiences with compelling performances from renowned artists and emerging talents alike.
