CNN’s latest poll conducted by SSRS indicates that while the public’s pessimism about the economy seems to be easing, there remain significant concerns about the nation’s economic trajectory and President Joe Biden’s economic policies.
According to the poll, only 35% of Americans feel that things in the country today are going well, which is an improvement from last fall when only 28% felt positively about the state of affairs. Similarly, 26% of Americans currently believe that economic conditions have stabilized, with 48% stating that they believe the economy remains in a downturn.
The poll also highlights the partisan divide in views of the economy, with the uptick in sentiment coming mainly among Democrats and independents. Within the Democratic Party, there is also a significant age divide, with most younger Democrats less likely to see the economy as recovering.
When asked to explain why they feel the economy is still in decline, most Americans cited inflation and the cost of living, with many pointing to their own financial situations. An overwhelming 91% of Republicans believe that Biden’s policies have worsened the economy, while only 55% of Democrats say that his policies have improved things.
The poll also indicates growing concerns about the situation at the US-Mexico border, with 79% of Americans describing it as a crisis. There has also been a rise in hardline immigration sentiment, with a 54% majority of Republicans now saying that the US should prioritize deportation of undocumented immigrants.
In terms of foreign policy, Biden’s approval rating for handling the Russian invasion of Ukraine stands at 41%, while 34% approve of his handling of the war between Israel and Hamas. The public is closely split on the level of US assistance to Israel and Ukraine, with views differing sharply along partisan lines.
The CNN poll provides a comprehensive overview of Americans’ views on the economy, immigration, and foreign policy, shedding light on the sentiments and concerns of the public.
Historically, the United States has contended with various economic and foreign policy challenges, with public opinion often serving as a barometer for the effectiveness of government policies. It is important to continue monitoring public sentiment on these issues to inform decision-making and policy implementation at the national level.
