Canada’s universal healthcare system is administered at the provincial level, meaning each province has its own health card program. Here’s a comprehensive guide to the major provincial health insurance programs.

Ontario: OHIP

OHIP covers most medically necessary physician and hospital services for eligible Ontario residents. There is a 3-month waiting period for new residents.

British Columbia: MSP

MSP provides coverage for medically required services in B.C. As of January 2020, MSP premiums were eliminated. Coverage begins the first day of the month following a 3-month waiting period.

Alberta: AHCIP

AHCIP covers Alberta residents for medically required physician services and hospital care. Alberta has no premium — coverage is funded through general tax revenue.

Quebec: RAMQ

RAMQ administers health insurance in Quebec. It covers physician services, hospital care, and operates the public drug insurance plan.
