As California tries to catch the (offshore) wind, do problems on the East Coast raise caution flags?

Numerous offshore wind energy projects on the East Coast are facing challenges and cancellations, but California officials are optimistic about the potential for offshore wind energy in the Golden State. David Hochschild, chair of the California Energy Commission, sees offshore wind as a critical component of the state’s energy policy over the next three decades.

To meet California’s goal of sourcing 100 percent of its electricity from carbon-free sources by 2045, the state aims to generate up to 5 gigawatts of power from offshore wind by 2030 and 25 gigawatts by 2045. This is a significant target, considering that the Diablo Canyon nuclear plant produces 2.2 gigawatts of capacity, making up about 9 percent of the state’s power mix each year.

With a growing reliance on renewable energy sources, the state is looking to offshore wind as a way to supplement solar power generation, especially during peak demand periods in the evening. Offshore wind is a clean energy resource that complements existing wind and solar power, providing reliable production during crucial hours when the grid needs it the most.

However, challenges have emerged on the East Coast, with major energy companies canceling or reconsidering offshore wind projects due to financial issues and rising costs. California’s offshore wind industry will be unique, as it will utilize floating wind turbines due to the steep continental shelf off the Pacific coast. Offshore wind projects are proposed off the coasts of Morro Bay in Central California and Humboldt County in Northern California, with General Dynamics-NASSCO announcing plans to compete for contracts to build the installation and support ships needed for these projects.
