Hockey officials provide few details after altercation leaves goalie unconscious on ice

Hockey officials have remained tight-lipped about an incident in the Pacific Junior Hockey League (PJHL) that resulted in a goaltender, Evan Paul of the North Vancouver Wolf Pack, lying motionless on the ice. The incident occurred during a game against the Richmond Sockeyes at Minoru Arena on Jan. 25.

Video footage shows a fight breaking out in the third period, during which Richmond defenseman Eithan Grishin held Paul for close to 20 seconds before releasing him, causing Paul to slump to the ice. Grishin was subsequently given a match penalty for a blow to the head.

The North Vancouver Wolf Pack confirmed that Paul sustained a “severe injury” and is currently recovering at home. However, they declined to provide further details. CBC News attempted to contact PJHL commissioner Trevor Alto, but has not received a response. A statement from the Richmond Sockeyes labeled the incident a “league matter” and mentioned an upcoming hearing.

Grishin, 19, has a history of suspensions, having been suspended for 16 games earlier in the season for various incidents, including harassment of an official and receiving a match penalty for slashing.

The PJHL, a Tier 2 Junior A league, comprises teams from the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, and the Sunshine Coast.

Throughout its history, hockey has seen a number of controversial incidents, some of which have sparked discussions about player safety and sportsmanship. This recent incident raises concerns about respecting opponents and enforcing regulations to protect players.

If anyone has any information regarding this incident, they are urged to come forward and assist with any ongoing investigations.
