Berthoud Pass in Colorado Mountains Closed Due to Avalanche

The Berthoud Pass, also known as U.S. Highway 40, in the Colorado mountains was closed in both directions on Sunday after an avalanche covered at least half of one lane. The closure, which extends from Robins Roost to Henderson Mine Road, was confirmed by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center and the Colorado Department of Transportation. This closure affects the area between the towns of Winter Park and Empire.

Officials did not provide an estimated time for when the road might reopen. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center reported approximately 8 inches of snow on the ground, with an additional 10 to 20 inches of snow expected through the evening.

An update from the Colorado Department of Transportation indicated that 10 vehicles were caught in a bank slide that occurred around 11:20 a.m., with no reported injuries. More snowfall is anticipated for the mountain areas, with some locations expected to receive an additional 6 to 12 inches of snow. Storm total accumulations could potentially exceed 3 feet.

The Berthoud Pass has a historic significance as it was a key route for early settlers and miners in Colorado. The pass played a crucial role in the development of the state’s infrastructure and economy during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
