‘Argylle’ Fails to Impress with Mixed Reviews, Flops with $18M in Big-Budget Apple Release

First Apple Studios Box Office Flop with Spy Thriller “Argylle”

Apple Studios has experienced its first box office flop with the debut of “Argylle,” a star-studded spy thriller directed by Matthew Vaughn. Despite a $200-million budget, the film only managed to rake in $18 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

This marks a significant setback for Apple, which has been in the original film Business since 2019 and won an Oscar for best picture with 2021’s “CODA.” Apple had high hopes for “Argylle” after the success of its first two big-budget releases, “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon”, though neither of these films turned a profit. However, both films raised Apple’s reputation as a home to top directors and prestige filmmaking.

“Argylle” stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, and Henry Cavill. Despite aspirations of starting a new franchise, the movie was panned by critics and underperformed with ticket buyers.

The film’s pre-release hype included speculation about singer Taylor Swift’s involvement due to the presence of argyle patterns and a cat in promotional materials, but it was revealed that Swift had no involvement in the film.

In the midst of “Argylle’s” disappointing performance, the Christian drama series “The Chosen” took second place at the weekend box office.

Other films, including Warner Bros.’ “Wonka,” Paramount’s “Mean Girls,” and Amazon MGM’s “The Beekeeper”, also continued to draw audiences.

This latest setback for Apple comes after the success of “CODA” and the mixed performance of its first two high-budget productions. The studio’s next release is anticipated with curiosity and skepticism from the Entertainment industry.
