Live coverage of trial starting for Prior Lake suspect accused of stabbing five people on Apple River in Wisconsin

The trial of Nicolae Miu, a Prior Lake man accused of killing a teen and stabbing four others on the Apple River in Wisconsin nearly two years ago, is currently underway in Hudson, Wisconsin.

According to investigators, video footage from July 2022 shows Miu being attacked by a group of tubers on the river before he stabbed five people, resulting in the death of 17-year-old Isaac Schuman. The victims, aged 17 to 24, were from Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Witnesses reported that Miu was initially in the Apple River with goggles and a snorkel, but a group of tubers accused him of inappropriate behavior. Miu claimed he was actually looking for a lost cell phone.

The prosecution argues that Miu was the aggressor in the incident, stabbing five people, with Schuman losing his life at the scene. Miu’s attorneys, however, maintain that he acted in self-defense after feeling threatened by the group accusing him of harassment.

Miu faces one count of first-degree homicide and four counts of attempted first-degree homicide. He pleaded not guilty to all charges in September 2022 and could potentially face a life sentence if convicted.

The trial is taking place at the St. Croix County Courthouse in Hudson, Wisconsin. Opening statements can be viewed on various platforms, including CBS News Minnesota and the CBS News app.
