Uvalde Mayor Steps Down Due to Health Concerns Following Controversial Report on 2022 School Shooting, NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth Reports

Uvalde Mayor Cody Smith unexpectedly resigned on Monday, citing Health reasons and leaving the small Texas city without its leader amidst ongoing recovery. This news comes as the community grapples with the aftermath of the tragic Robb Elementary School shooting in May 2022, where 21 lives were lost.

The decision to step down follows a recent report commissioned by the city that defended the actions of local officers during the response to the school shooting. The report, authored by investigator Jesse Prado, found no wrongdoing by the officers who confronted the teen gunman armed with a deadly weapon. However, the findings of the report sparked outrage among victims’ families and community members.

In a separate development, Uvalde Police Chief Daniel Rodriguez announced his resignation effective April 6, following the report’s release. Rodriguez, who was on vacation at the time of the shooting, stated that it was time for a new chapter in his career.

The Uvalde City Council is set to discuss the report in a private session, after concerns for Mayor Smith’s health led to the postponement of a prior meeting. As the city navigates these challenging times, the departure of its mayor and police chief signals a period of transition and reflection for Uvalde and its residents.
