Phuong Hyunh, owner of Bella Paris Nails and Spa in Little Italy, arrived at her salon to find the front window splattered with paint and shattered by a rock. This act of vandalism was just one of the many problems Hyunh has faced in her seven years of owning the salon. Kevin Arnold, president of the San Diego Neighborhood Coalition, expressed concerns about the rising crime and homelessness in the area, noting that small businesses like Hyunh’s cannot afford the costs associated with such incidents.
Arnold called on the city of San Diego to take action and provide support for businesses impacted by homelessness and crime. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive plan to address the issue, including safe sleeping sites, counseling, and sustainable living arrangements for those in need. The coalition also advocated for stricter prosecution of criminals, regardless of their homeless status.
Hyunh shared her struggles with dealing with homeless individuals camping outside her salon, leading to unsanitary conditions that have deterred customers. The recent vandalism not only hurt her Business but also incurred expenses for replacing the broken glass. Despite reporting the incident to the police, Hyunh remains unsure of the perpetrator’s identity.
The San Diego Neighborhood Coalition has been actively addressing crime in Little Italy, with plans to engage Councilman Stephen Whitburn in future discussions. Community members are hopeful for a solution to the growing challenges faced by local businesses.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the impact of homelessness and crime on small businesses and the urgent need for comprehensive support and solutions in affected communities.
