Texas A&M University System Expands Free Mental Health Services for Students
In a groundbreaking initiative, Texas A&M University has announced the expansion of free mental health services to over 153,000 students across all A&M System institutions. This move comes as part of the university’s commitment to supporting student well-being and academic success.
The newly introduced TELUS Health Student Support app offers students 24/7 access to confidential mental health care, including virtual counseling via phone or chat, as well as appointments for short-term support via telephone or video. This innovative app aims to break down barriers to seeking help, with Vice Chancellor James Hallmark noting that “about 75 percent of students who are struggling with depression or anxiety are reluctant to get help.” The TELUS app provides an easy and accessible way for students to take the crucial first step in seeking assistance.
Available on both Android and iOS platforms, TELUS offers counseling services in multiple languages, including Spanish, French, Mandarin, and Cantonese, with the option for additional languages upon request. Students may also schedule repeat sessions with the same counselor if needed, and the platform includes an educational library, anonymous mental health assessments, and access to guided meditations and fitness sessions.
This expansion of mental health care benefits was made possible through the investment of Chancellor John Sharp and the A&M System Regents, who recognized the importance of prioritizing student mental health. Hallmark emphasized the significance of mental health in student success, acknowledging the inherently transformative and sometimes stressful nature of the college experience.
The availability of free mental health services for Texas A&M University students is a crucial step toward removing barriers to seeking support and promoting overall student well-being. As students navigate the challenges of the academic journey, access to mental health resources plays a vital role in fostering a healthy and supportive campus environment.
